MOUNT DESERT ISLAND INFORMATION

The Mount Desert Island YMCA is located in downtown Bar Harbor, Maine, in the shadow of Acadia National Park. Bar Harbor and the Mount Desert Island community welcomes over 3 million visitors during the summer months of June-August and boasts a small, but vibrant year-round community.

For those who love the outdoors, Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park boasts 24 mountain peaks and 125 miles of pristine hiking trails. Hikes and climbs range from easy and family-friendly to difficult and best left to experienced climbers. Various ocean adventures are available for all from whale watches and nature tours  to sea-kayaking and paddle-boarding. In the summer, with over 3 million visitors arriving, MDI comes alive with people, restaurants, and community activities.

In the winter, when the visitors are gone and it's just the year-round residents, the pace of the island slows down. Community events through the Criterion Theater, local churches and charities, and the island libraries are favorites for all. The Jesup Library of Bar Harbor has hosted speakers like former Senator George Mitchell and host a wide range of activities such as: Girls Who Code Club, Contra Dancing, Lego Club, and much more!

The Mount Desert Island Regional School System (MDIRSS-AOS #91) has eight elementary/middle schools and one high school. Conners-Emerson School of Bar Harbor, was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2017.

Executive Director

The new CEO will join our Y with a strong group of energized board members with a true passion about the mission and love for the community. The CEO serves as the chief executive officer and reports to and is directly held responsible by the Board of Directors. The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for key result areas as established by the Board of Directors. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Chief Executive Officer at the YMCA sets the strategic direction of the organization; oversees its financial stability, staffing, development and operations; and positions the Y as a community convener and collaborator to address critical social issues. Lifeguards
