Chief Executive Officer - Ann Tikkanen   exec@mdiymca.org

Ann brings a decades-long career in executive and financial leadership to the MDI Y. Notably, she served for twenty-two years at the YMCA of Greater Boston in a progression of senior roles, primarily as Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President leading all financial matters plus the Workforce Development, IT, and HR functions. Ann also has an impressive track record of careful financial management, including delivering balanced budgets in 21 of her 22 years as CFO.  She most recently worked as a non-profit consultant, and as Chief Financial and Administrative Officer of the Trustees of Reservations in Boston. Ann earned her MBA from Babson College and a BS in Business Administration from Northeastern

Operations Director - Robert Huff   operations@mdiymca.org

Bob is enthusiastic to wear the hat of Operations Director at the Y.  He has lived in Maine his whole life growing up in Owls Head and he graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in Kinesiology and Physiology of Exercise.  Several years ago, Bob and his family decided to make Bar Harbor their permanent home after vacationing on MDI for over 15 years. Having spent the last 20 years working in various customer service industries he enjoys serving both residents and seasonal visitors to Mount Desert Island.

Senior Wellness Director - Mark Rice-Schoon   wellness@mdiymca,org 

Mark Schoon was born in Kittery, Maine but spent most of his childhood in Marion, Iowa with stops in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Washington state. He attended Excelsior College and is a retired Chief Master Sergeant in the US Air Force. An avid Sea Kayaker, Mark has taught at sea kayaking symposiums around the country, expeditioned above the Arctic Circle by sea kayak, kayaked in the Pacific, Great Lakes, Gulf of Mexico, the North Atlantic, the North Sea, the Arctic Ocean, as well as the sea surrounding England and Scotland. Mark's goals for the future of the Y include his continuing effort to have the safest and most effective team of aquatic professionals around as well as expanding the offerings of the Wellness programs to better reach all ages of the MDI community.

Maegan was born in northern Vermont and came to Maine for college on a Track & Field scholarship at The University of Maine in Orono. She earned a BS in Elementary Education and Child and Human Development and Family Relations and a MS in Instructional Technology. She was a technology integrator in the Bangor area and all over Hancock County for nine years before transitioning to teaching adults fitness rather than kids technology. She worked at MDI YMCA for six years in the Health and Wellness department before working two and a half years at The Down East Family YMCA in Marketing and fitness. She is excited to be back at The MDIY in her community. Maegan lives in the town of Mount Desert with her husband Matt and children Jay and Seneca.

Childcare & Youth Development Director - Taylor Walls   childcare@mdiymca.org

Taylor was born and raised on MDI. She spent her youth at the MDI YMCA swimming on the Shark’s swim team and now watches her son swim on the same team! She graduated with an Associate’s degree in Early Childhood from EMCC. She grew up around children, her mom & 4 aunts had home daycares which Taylor spent many years being a part of. Taylor started her adventure as an employee here at the MDI YMCA in 2015 as our assistant teacher, working her way up to lead teacher and now becoming the childcare director. She is raising her 6-year-old son here on MDI, and wants to give him the opportunity to grow up in a YMCA atmosphere like herself. Seeing him be a part of the YMCA community brings back childhood memories for Taylor & she would like to keep that feeling going for Jayden. She is excited to educate all the little minds that become part of the YMCA, and ready to watch them GROW!

Kris is excited to join the Y team as the new Membership Director. He thrives on helping others and is enthusiastic about growing and making genuine connections. He has years of experience working in various customer service industries, and is very happy for the opportunity to serve the MDI YMCA. He’s a new dad and enjoys hiking and running being a three time Boston Marathoner. He’s excited for this new chapter Professionally and Personally.

Race Director & Fundraising Manager - Jennifer VanDongen   races@mdiymca.org

Jennifer grew up in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. She attended college at the University of South Carolina on an athletic scholarship to compete in Track & Field as a heptathlete while majoring in Chemistry/Biology. After years of working in the pharmaceutical field, she moved to Maine, and took time off work to raise her 3 daughters, Amelia, Cora and Caroline. Jennifer enjoys volunteering in the community and first became involved with the MDI Y as a member of the half marathon race committees. When not at the Y, you can find her running up and down the mountain trails of Acadia,
hiking with her daughters, biking the carriage roads, or on another outdoor adventure.

Aquatics Director - Jim Willis   sharks@mdiymca.org

Jim is a former Y swimmer from Brockton, MA, a four year letterman and a graduate of the University of Maine. Jim was the coach of the Bangor Y for 5 years, the Canoe City Swim Club (Old Town Y) for 9 years, and the St. Croix Dolphins coach for 3 years before moving to Bar Harbor. While in St. Croix, Jim was the National Coach for the US Virgin Islands at the 1999 Pan Am Games, 2000 Olympic Games, and 2001 World University Games. He is an ASCA Level 4 Coach and the former General Chair of Maine Swimming. Jim was the Maine Swimming Coach of the Year for both 2014 and 2015. He was inaugurated into the Brockton High School Hall of Fame in 2016. 

Specialty Camp Coordinator - Emily Miller emily@mdiymca.org

Emily grew up in Houlton, ME then moved to Bangor to attend Husson University. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration along with a Masters in Business Administration. At her time at Husson, she was an active member of the Cheer team, where she was a team captain during senior year.  She worked at the Old Town Y for two years in the preschool program. While at OTO YMCA she also coached two competition cheerleading teams and tumbling at the Y. Emily loves to go to the gym, be outside, and stay active.
