Specialty Camps

Welcome to the MDI YMCA Specialty Camps! These are the best for kids who want a summer camp experience within an area that interests them. Take a look at what the Y has to offer this summer, there's something for everyone!

Registration can be done over email with our Youth Development Director, Jared Erskine.. We ask that those who register via email to remember to turn in a physical registration/waiver to the MDI YMCA by emailing it to Jared or mailing it in to 21 Park Street, Bar Harbor, ME 04609. June 15 - 19     9AM-3PM     Ages 7+     $250 Member/$275 Non Member

Kick off the summer with activity. This camp, designed as a day hiking program, will explore the wonders of our backyard. Our hikes will be in Acadia National Park and our goal is to summit a different mountain every day. Participants should be in condition to hike at a moderate pace. Pack weather appropriate gear, lunches, snacks, and water. Youth Development Director and outdoor educator and Wilderness Guide, Jared Erskine, will lead the hikes. Camp starts and ends at the MDI YMCA.


June 22 - 26     9AM-3PM     Ages 7+     $250 Member/$275 Non Member

Football, basketball, tennis, kickball, and other team sports will be played this week. Join our YMCA in a week of playing multiple sports with trained coached. Learn some basic skills from each sport, and then put your newly learned skills to the test with pick up games and friendly fun competition. Wednesday the 25th the camp will be going to Hadlock Field in Portland to watch the Sea Dogs baseball team in a statewide camp day.


July 6 - 10     9AM-3PM     Ages 7-15     $200 Member/$220 Non Member

Created by Maine Swimming Hall of Fame member Lenny DeMuro, this camp is ideal for swimmers who are either interested in exploring or further developing their skills as a competitive swimmer. Camp staff includes MDI YMCA Head Competitive Swim Coach Jim Willis. Minimum of 8 swimmers needed. Sign up early!


July 13 - 17     9AM-3PM     Ages 7+     $250 Member/$275 Non Member

Come get a line wet and be hooked! Maine fisheries are nationally renowned for our varied species and rich habitats. Come join the MDI YMCA and hone your angler skills with this exciting week long camp. Learn the basics of bait selection, fishing knots, and explore different types of fishing. We will explore both salt and fresh water. Campers should pack a lunch and clothing for varied weather conditions. Campers may bring their own tackle and pole. If not, pole and tackle will be provided. All anglers ages 16 and over need a valid Maine State fishing license.


July 13 - 16     8:30AM-12:30PM     Ages 11+     

$100 Member/$125 Non Member

The MDI YMCA Sharks Open Water Camp will begin with an hour long session in the pool followed by an open water swim at a local lake. All participants must be at least 11 years old and have prior swim team experience. 


June 28 - July 3     9AM-3PM     Ages 9+     $200 Member/$220 N.Member

Living on MDI and surrounded by ocean if one of the many gifts we have living here. Come learn about sea kayaking in Maine and the basic sea kayaking skills needed to be a safe and efficient paddler. In this week long program, participants will learn basic paddle strokes, navigation skills, gear preparation, and on water skills. Campers will get into the boats in the Y pool and fresh water before paddling the ocean. End the week with a Friday overnight paddle trip. Maine state licensed Sea Kayak Guide and MDI YMCA Youth Development Director, Jared Erskine, will lead the camp. Erskine has 10 years of experience sea kayaking here on MDI and other coastal waterways of Maine.


July 20 - July 24     9AM-3PM    Ages 9+     

$250 Members/$275 Non Members

Join Youth Development Director Jared Erskine as he teaches the kids the basics of bouldering as well as how to stay safe and alert while learning this growing sport. Jared has years of wilderness survival experience. Questions can be directed to him at childcare@mdiymca.org.


July 27 - July 31     Multiple times for multiple ages. 

Camp is filled with drills and practices designed to improve ball control, foot skills, fakes, and moves. Each day includes technical drills, tactical practices, coached scrimmages, and a World Cup tournament! All coaches are flown to the USA exclusively for soccer camp. Required: shin guards, long soccer socks, water bottle, sun screen, and weather appropriate clothing. The Y is not handling registrations. Click HERE for registration!


August 3 - 7     9AM-3PM     Ages 7-15    $200 Member/$220 Non Member

If you're looking to experience a wide variety of water related activities, this camp is perfect. Log-rolling, water polo, and diving are only a few of the activities offered. Campers will take time to further perfect basic swim strokes. Camp is led by Jim Willis, MDI YMCA Head Competitive Swim Coach. Swimmers should be able to pass a deep-end swim test.

Kids without previous dance or gymnastics experience will learn basic dance skills, perform routines, and explore different pieces of equipment. This unique sport combines dance and basic tumbling with the use of hand apparatus (ball, hoop, rope, clubs, and ribbon). Gymnasts perform on floor mats with musics. Artistic interpretation is as much a part of the performance as technical skills. Min. 6, Max 10. 


August 10 - 14     9AM-3PM     Ages 7+   $200 Member/$220 Non Member

Explore Acadia National Park and see the wonders that the forest has. In this camp, we will explore different parts and learn about the trees, plants, and animals that live in Acadia. We will spend time observing and taking photos of nature. Come join the MDI YMCA and find your love for nature!


Scholarships are available to all who need them. The MDI YMCA strives to ensure that all children get the camp experience they want regardless of their family's ability to pay. 

You can apply for Membership and Program Scholarships at the same time or you can apply for Program Scholarships without membership, the process is almost the same.

1. Bring your most recent 1040 tax form to the Y. (If you do not file, we will ask you for a Social Security or Disability Statement).

2. Complete a short MFA/Programs Scholarship Application and we will find the membership and/or program rate that works for you.

3. (Membership Addition) If you're applying for a Membership and Program Scholarship fill out a Membership Application.

4. Fill out your child's Camp Cadillac Registration/Waiver form.

5. Turn in all the  above documents. We cannot process your request until we have all the documents in hand. 

We strive to have the scholarships proccessed and applied within a week, however, the sooner you get your application in the better.

For Program Scholarships only, drop off/email all documents to Jared Erskine, Youth Development Director.
