'The Lobster Races' is a signature event for the MDI YMCA. Four lobsters per heat race in successive heats while immersed in sea-water-filled trays. Spectators cheer for the lobsters, which are sponsored by their favorite businesses. This is a unique event; nowhere else in the world are lobsters raced. We coddle our borrowed lobsters, keeping them cool and wet at all times, and return them in good health at the end of the event. This event is free to spectators. This event is one of our most important fundraising opportunities all year. Funds raised help provide scholarships to those who otherwise could not afford to participate in MDI YMCA programs. Funds also are used to help keep our YMCA strong and open year-round to residents and visitors of the greater Mount Desert Island area.
